We finally made it to see the exhibition, ‘Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling’, at MoMA this weekend. On display are pre-fab projects (models, drawings, and five full-scale prototypes), ranging from 1833 to 2008. It was inspiring to see how the projects evolved with the technology of their time. A few of my favourite ones are:
1.
Moduli 225, 1969-71, by Finnish architects, Kristian Gullichsen and Juhani Pallasmaa.
Used primarily as summer cottages, this project consists of a series of modular cubes with modifiable wall, floor, and ceiling components made from wood. It’s incredibly hard to find photos of this project online but the use of wood as a primary material makes this project harmonious and very livable.

Case Study House No.8, 1945-49, by Charles & Ray Eames.
I like the fact that the Eameses designed this unique looking house using only available off-the-shelf materials and components from its time.

‘Instant House’ Digitally Fabricated House for New Orleans, MIT.
This house came to life in a response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans. The shell of the house and most of its architectural components are fabricated with laser-cut plywood. I like that the materials for the whole house can be delivered flat and three-dimensional components like balusters can be constructed by criss-crossing two flat pieces to form its third dimension. These ornamental components give the house a New Orleans gingerbread character.
